James B. Coats (1901–1961) was a Mississippi schoolteacher, singing-school leader and gospel songwriter whose “The Sweetest Gift, A Mother’s Smile” and “Where Could I Go But to the Lord” became standards across gospel, country and bluegrass. Born in Summerland, Mississippi, he began teaching music classes and leading evangelistic singing at fourteen and taught in public schools for most of his life.
