He grew up in a farming community near Plato, Missouri, and started learning several instruments at 11. He plays guitar and mandolin as well, but the banjo came first for him, and he names Jim Orchard, Aaron McDarris, Haskell McCormick, Ferrell Stowe, Earl Scruggs, Don Reno and Sonny Osborne among his main influences. From 2009 he played banjo with Jim Orchard and the Ozark Bluegrass Boys, a band popular in the Missouri region.

When Cody Looper left Flamekeeper in the spring of 2017, Cleveland hired Shrode, who played his first show with the band in late April. Cleveland said at the time that the new man had to learn a great deal of material in a short time, along with several banjo styles that were new to him. On Tall Fiddler, released by Compass in August 2019, he was the band’s banjo player alongside Josh Richards on guitar, Nathan Livers on mandolin and Chris Douglas on bass, with guests including Del McCoury, Jerry Douglas and Tommy Emmanuel; the album won the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album in 2020. He was still in the lineup in July 2022, also singing, and he played banjo on the Flamekeeper tracks of Lovin’ of the Game, released by Compass in March 2023, including its title song.
