The Primitive Quartet had grown out of two sets of western North Carolina brothers, Reagan and Larry Riddle and Furman and Norman Wilson, and by the time Tolbert arrived it also included Mike Riddle and the Indiana-born singer Randy Fox. On the group’s Mountain Heritage albums of the early 2000s, among them Mountain Memories (2000), He’s Still Able (2002), 30th Anniversary (2003) and I’ll Have a Reward (2004), he is credited on fiddle, banjo and mandolin alongside Norman Wilson on mandolin and David Johnson on fiddle and Dobro.

He joined first as an instrumentalist, and after Norman Wilson’s death in 2014 he also took a place as a singer. In March 2023 the quartet put its last studio recordings, Stay Their Arms, on digital platforms as a farewell, with Albert E. Brumley’s “If We Never Meet Again” among the songs, and on 20 May 2023 it gave its final concert, ending fifty years of full-time touring.
