Before String Cheese he played guitar in the Whiskey Creek Warriors on the Colorado ski-town circuit. In 1993 he, Bill Nershi, Michael Kang and Michael Travis began playing together in Crested Butte as the Blue String Cheese Band, a name for a bluegrass band that also played “cheesy covers,” and soon became the String Cheese Incident. In 1996 they gave up their day jobs and moved to Boulder, added the keyboard player Kyle Hollingsworth, and started their own label, SCI Fidelity. Moseley plays bass and sings, and he wrote and sings band songs including “Resume Man,” “Joyful Sound” and “Sometimes a River.”

During the band’s break from 2007 to 2009 he toured with Keller Williams in Williams’s new band with Moseley, Gibb Droll and Jeff Sipe, first called the WMDs. With Williams and Jeff Austin, the mandolin player of Yonder Mountain String Band, he played in Grateful Grass, whose live album Rex (Live at the Fillmore) (2008) raised money for the Grateful Dead’s Rex Foundation. A second Grateful Grass album, Dos, recorded at a Rex Foundation benefit at the Fillmore in San Francisco on 7 December 2013 with Michael Kang on fiddle, came out in 2014. In 2010 he released a record with the Contribution, a group whose collaborators included Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth.

The String Cheese Incident returned to touring in 2009, and in 2021 it was named to the Colorado Music Hall of Fame along with Hot Rize, Leftover Salmon and Yonder Mountain String Band.
