The lyric is a study in wounded withdrawal — a jilted lover who, rather than face the company of others or the memory of a lost love, declares he would rather be alone. That theme of solitude chosen as a refuge from heartbreak gave the song its quiet, bruised feeling, set against the Foggy Mountain Boys’ bright instrumental sound.
The song was revived for a later generation by the Bluegrass Album Band, the all-star group whose series of recordings devoted to traditional bluegrass standards introduced many such songs to younger players.
