“I’ve Found a Hiding Place” is a gospel song written by Albert E. Brumley, the Oklahoma songwriter behind “I’ll Fly Away” and hundreds of other sacred songs. It was introduced on record by the Chuck Wagon Gang, the Texas family quartet whose plain, devout singing made them one of the most beloved acts in Southern gospel; they recorded it in 1940.
The song’s title image is a familiar one in gospel writing — the believer finding shelter and refuge, a “hiding place,” in God amid the storms of life. Brumley’s gift for pairing a simple, memorable melody with that kind of comforting sentiment made the song a natural for congregational and quartet singing alike.
The Chuck Wagon Gang’s recordings strongly shaped early bluegrass gospel, and “I’ve Found a Hiding Place” was among the songs that crossed over.
