“Roll On Blues” is a bluegrass song written by Connie Gately, half of the early duo Connie and Babe. Gately recorded it in the mid-1950s with his partner Babe Lofton and their band, the Black Mountain Boys.
Connie and Babe were one of the lesser-known but well-regarded acts of early bluegrass, recording for small labels in a hard, traditional style. “Roll On Blues” is a characteristic piece — a brisk, blues-tinged number whose rolling rhythm carries a lyric of heartache and restless travel.
The song was rescued from obscurity decades later by the Johnson Mountain Boys, the Maryland band devoted to reviving exactly this kind of hard, early bluegrass.
