“This Sad Song” was co-written by Alison Krauss and the banjo player Alison Brown. Krauss and Union Station recorded it for their 2004 album “Lonely Runs Both Ways,” with Dan Tyminski singing the lead.
For all its title, the song is a brisk, up-tempo number. The singer means to shake off heartbreak rather than wallow in it, turning a sad song into something with a kick to it; the lively arrangement works against the sorrow in the words.
The album was another in the long run of admired Union Station recordings.
