“Walk the Way the Wind Blows” was written by Tim O’Brien, the singer and songwriter of the band Hot Rize. Hot Rize recorded it in 1985, and the following year Kathy Mattea made it a country hit.
The song is set among hill people and the hard country they come from. It speaks of staying true to where one began, of carrying the values of home, and of moving with life rather than against it — walking, as the title says, the way the wind blows.
The song crossed easily between bluegrass and country and was later recorded by other artists as well.
