20 Gospel Favorites

Hylo Brown

Album · 1988 · Rural Rhythm RC 187

20 Gospel Favorites is a 1997 reissue on Rural Rhythm Records (RC 187) presenting the identical session content as the label's 1967 original release Sings Country Gospel Songs (RRHB 187). Hylo Brown (vocals, guitar), Ross Branham (five-string banjo), Dan Milhon (dobro), Jack Casey (guitar), and Dick Brickles (acoustic bass) recorded the twenty-track set in Akron, Ohio, in 1967 under producer Lee Sutton. The reissue retains the full original program under a new title and catalog number with no changes to the session content. The recording documents Brown and the Rural Rhythm–era Timberliners in straight-ahead acoustic bluegrass-gospel, with Brown's high Kentucky tenor and a bare-bones ensemble that traces its lineage directly to the camp-meeting tradition. See also the original 1967 release on Rural Rhythm RRHB 187.
