2nd Cut (Hay Holler HHH 100) is a 1990 release by the Bluegrass Band, the group banjoist Butch Robins led and recorded for Hay Holler, the label he launched. Most of it is not new music. Robins later explained that it reissued the band’s earlier album Another Saturday Night, with tracks added and some remixed, because the group needed promotional material and something to sell on the road. He said it was never released for retail distribution.
Another Saturday Night had come out on Voyager (VRLP 330-S) in 1982. It was recorded at Castle Recording Studios in Nashville by Alan O’Bryant on guitar, Robins on banjo, Blaine Sprouse on fiddle, Ed Dye on dobro and bones, and David Sebring on bass, with O’Bryant and Dye singing. The repertoire runs from Sprouse’s “Mitzi’s Hornpipe” and Bill Monroe’s “Pilgrim’s Knob” and “White House Blues” to Jimmy Skinner’s “Died a Rounder at 21” and “Another Saturday Night,” Clyde Moody’s “Six White Horses,” and traditional pieces such as “Cora’s Gone,” “Rain and Snow” and “Wreck of the Old 97.”
2nd Cut keeps every track from that LP except Jimmy Dickens’s “Plain Old Country Boy,” and adds three titles: “Lonesome Whistle Blues,” “Doghouse Blues” and “The Old, Old House.” Robins had played banjo in Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys from 1977 until 1981. O’Bryant, heard here on guitar, is better known as the banjo player and a singer in the Nashville Bluegrass Band.
