2nd Cut (Hay Holler HHH-100, circa 1991) is a recording from the Bluegrass Band, a short-lived but significant ensemble co-founded by banjoist Butch Robins and fiddler Blaine Sprouse that briefly united several figures who would go on to shape the Washington, D.C.–area bluegrass scene. Alan O'Bryant — later a co-founder of the Nashville Bluegrass Band — plays guitar alongside David Sebring, Ed Dye, Bradley Walker, and Jasper Lorentzen. The project was necessarily brief: Sprouse departed to join the Osborne Brothers, and O'Bryant left to co-found the Nashville Bluegrass Band, leaving the album as a document of a potentially lasting partnership cut short. The recording draws partly from an earlier Voyager Records LP and represents the D.C.-area traditional bluegrass milieu from which both Hay Holler Records and several important bands emerged during that era.
