A Collection of Instrumentals (Mountain Fever Records MFR 160325, 2016) is an all-instrumental studio album from Section House, a quintet of young Nashville-area bluegrass pickers already established as first-call sidemen in the professional circuit. Jake Stargel plays guitar; Aaron Ramsey plays mandolin; Cory Walker plays banjo; Bryan McDowell plays fiddle; and Jeff Partin plays bass and resophonic guitar. The repertoire mixes traditional fiddle tunes — "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," "Dance All Night," and others from the standard repertoire — with original compositions that move into harmonically open territory shaped by the progressive acoustic tradition. The band plays with the precision of working sidemen and the communal energy of a peer session, and the record makes no concession to radio formats. Mountain Fever's release confirmed the label's consistent commitment to presenting instrumental bluegrass as a serious standalone statement.
