“Snowflake Reel,” also known as “Snowflake Breakdown,” was composed in 1959 by the Canadian fiddler Wally Traugott, a noted television and Opry-stage player of his day.
The reel found a following among American fiddlers, especially near the Canadian border and in the Midwest. Its unusual chord and chromatic line in the second strain give it a distinctive twist, and it became a bluegrass favorite through fiddlers such as Bobby Hicks.
The tune is a popular jam piece. The version heard here is by Section House.
