A Gospel Bluegrass Homecoming: Volume One is a studio album from Marty Stuart and collaborators presenting bluegrass gospel material in the acoustic ensemble format that Stuart has maintained alongside his electric country recordings as a sustained commitment to the traditional forms he absorbed from his years with Lester Flatt and his subsequent immersion in the Nashville traditional music community. Stuart plays mandolin, guitar, and sings; Chris Scruggs plays guitar; Kenny Vaughan plays guitar; and Harry Stinson contributes drums and percussion. The "homecoming" format — presenting gospel material as a gathering of musicians connected by their shared tradition — allows Stuart to document the devotional side of the bluegrass inheritance in a relaxed, ensemble setting that captures the communal spirit of the Southern sacred music tradition he has spent his career honoring.
