A Man Must Carry On (Sugar Hill Records, 2000) is a studio album from Nashville session fiddler Aubrey Haynie, bringing together some of the most sought-after acoustic players in bluegrass and country music. Haynie plays fiddle and mandolin throughout; Bryan Sutton plays guitar; David Talbot contributes banjo; Jerry Douglas plays resonator guitar; and Dennis Crouch holds the bass. The album presents Haynie's fluid, melodically confident fiddle playing in a program of bluegrass instrumentals and original compositions, demonstrating the technical authority that had made him one of the most in-demand session musicians in Nashville across the 1990s. A Man Must Carry On offered audiences a focused showcase of Haynie's instrumental voice away from the session context in which he primarily operated, and it established his credibility as a recording artist in his own right.
