A Song That Will Linger is a 1989 LP by Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin on Rounder Records (0274). Stecher, a banjo, mandolin, fiddle and guitar player born in Brooklyn, and Brislin, formerly of the Any Old Time String Band, began performing as a duo in 1985 and married in 1987.

The program is made up almost entirely of traditional songs: “Red Rocking Chair,” “Paul and Silas,” “Those Two Blue Eyes,” “Will You Miss Me,” “Love Farewell,” “The Lovers Return” and “The Orphan Child.” Two are medleys that pair a known composer’s song with a traditional tune: Stephen Foster’s “Hard Times” with “Dusty Miller,” and Hank Williams’s “Alabama Waltz” with “Wolves Howling.” “Shut Up in the Mines at Coal Creek” is a traditional song about miners trapped in a mine; Alan Lomax recorded Nell Harrell singing a song of nearly the same title, “Shut Up in the Mines of Coal Creek,” in Harlan County, Kentucky, in 1937, and his collection classes it as a topical song. Stecher sings lead on the album’s version, with Brislin on harmony and Stecher on guitar.
