The Seldom Scene

Act Four was first issued in 1979 as an LP on Sugar Hill Records (SH 3709), the Seldom Scene’s first album for the label after their Rebel releases. This edition is the 1995 compact disc, Sugar Hill SHCD-3709, which Discogs credits to David Glasser as remastering engineer, with the same twelve tracks in the same order. John Starling had left the group in 1977; the album is the first on which he does not appear, with Phil Rosenthal, who had been on Baptizing (Rebel, 1978), as the guitarist and lead singer.

The musicians are Rosenthal on guitar, John Duffey on mandolin and guitar, Ben Eldridge on banjo, Mike Auldridge on dobro and pedal steel, and Tom Gray on bass. Rosenthal wrote “Leaving Harlan” and “Daddy Was a Railroad Man,” and Gray wrote “Walking the Blues.” The album also includes Bill Monroe’s instrumental “Tennessee Blues,” Jimmie Rodgers’s “California Blues,” Bob Wills’s “San Antonio Rose,” and Carter Stanley’s “This Weary Heart You Stole Away.”
