Act Four, released by Sugar Hill Records in 1979, is the Seldom Scene's debut for the new Durham label and the first to feature Phil Rosenthal as lead singer and guitarist — taking over from founding vocalist John Starling, who had left to pursue his career as a doctor. The album marked the band's move from Rebel to Sugar Hill, the label Barry Poss had just launched, and the start of the working configuration that would carry the Scene through the late 1970s and early 1980s. With John Duffey's mandolin and high tenor still anchoring the band, the program ran through the progressive song choices and tight ensemble work that had defined the Scene since its 1971 inception.
