Ain’t God Good

Paul Williams

Album · 1997 · Rounder CD 0414

Ain't God Good (Rounder CD 0414, 1997) marked the comeback of Paul Williams — born Paul Humphrey in 1935 in Wytheville, Virginia — a mandolin player and tenor vocalist who had been one of bluegrass's most important voices during his tenure with Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys from 1957 to 1962. After more than thirty years away from the spotlight, Williams returned with this all-gospel set backed by James King (guitar, vocals), Adam Poindexter (banjo), Jason Carter (fiddle), and Jason Moore (bass). Critics noted his voice had deepened in authority with age. The twelve tracks draw on traditional hymns and original devotional compositions, reestablishing Williams as a vital presence in the traditional bluegrass community.
