Anita Carter Sings Folk Songs Old and New (Mercury Records MG-20770, 1963) is a solo album from Anita Carter, the daughter of Mother Maybelle Carter and youngest of the Carter Sisters, recorded in December 1962 and produced by Shelby Singleton. Carter sings throughout; Mercury session musicians provide the Nashville arrangements beneath. The album is historically notable for containing "Love's Ring of Fire" — the original title and recording of the song June Carter Cash had written with Merle Kilgore and given to her sister Anita to complete the album. Anita Carter's version, recorded months before Johnny Cash's famous Columbia single, documents the composition in its original form and demonstrates her own distinctive phrasing of material that became one of the most recognized recordings in the American popular repertoire.
