Ballads from the Dust Bowl was issued in 1947 by Moses Asch’s Disc label (Disc 610) as three 78 rpm discs, six sides in all. The songs are “Pastures of Plenty,” “Hard Traveling,” “Rambling Blues,” “When the Curfew Blows,” “Talking Columbia Blues” and “My New Found Land.” Woody Guthrie sings and plays guitar, and on at least one track harmonica.

The set grew out of a request from the Bonneville Power Administration in April 1947: after Guthrie returned from singing at a rural electric cooperative meeting in Spokane, Washington, Asch suggested he record a few Columbia River songs. Guthrie agreed on condition that he could include some Dust Bowl songs, and the collection came out that year as this set. “Pastures of Plenty,” a song Guthrie wrote in 1941, was probably recorded in late April 1947.
