Baptizing is a 1978 album released by the Seldom Scene on Rebel Records (REB 1573), the band's sole all-gospel recording and their last for Rebel before moving to Sugar Hill. The album documents a moment of transition: John Starling (guitar, vocals) sings on roughly half the tracks while Phil Rosenthal—his permanent successor—contributes original songs and leads the remainder. John Duffey (mandolin, vocals), Ben Eldridge (banjo, vocals), Mike Auldridge (dobro, vocals), and Tom Gray (bass, vocals) anchor the ensemble, with Ricky Skaggs appearing as a guest fiddler. Note: both Starling and Skaggs are absent from the catalog personnel, which is an incomplete representation of this transitional recording.
