Barry Abernathy and Darrell Webb Present Appalachian Road Show

Appalachian Road Show

Album · 2018 · Billy Blue BBR 0760

Barry Abernathy and Darrell Webb Present Appalachian Road Show is the first album by Appalachian Road Show, released in 2018 on Billy Blue Records (BBR 0760). It was the first artist signing for Billy Blue, then a newly formed label, and Appalachian Road Show was a new collaboration between Abernathy and Webb. Abernathy, on banjo, was a founding member of Mountain Heart and has played with IIIrd Tyme Out and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. Webb, on mandolin, has worked with the Lonesome River Band, Rhonda Vincent & The Rage and J.D. Crowe & The New South.

The idea behind the band was to explore the musical history of the Appalachian Mountain people, from Civil War battles, coal mines and logging camps to church-house quartets and minstrel and medicine shows. The album opens with a spoken introduction and then plays ten pieces, among them “Little Black Train,” “Milwaukee Blues,” “Georgia Buck,” “Old Greasy Coat,” “Anna Lee,” “Oh Lovin’ Babe,” “Piney Mountains” and “I Am Just a Pilgrim.” A Bluegrass Today review describes the material as mostly traditional tunes adapted for contemporary listeners, with a handful of newer compositions such as “Dance, Dance, Dance” and “Broken Bones.”

The Bluegrass Discography lists Bryan Sutton and Zeb Snyder on guitar, Stuart Duncan and Jim VanCleve on fiddle and Todd Phillips on bass alongside Abernathy and Webb.
