“Oh Lovin’ Babe” is an old song recorded by Uncle Dave Macon, the banjo player and entertainer who became the first star of the Grand Ole Opry. Macon cut it in 1930, and its melody traces back to a ragtime-era song.
The song is a lighthearted courting number. Built on a bouncing, ragtime-flavored tune, it is the singer’s playful address to his lovin’ babe — more a vehicle for banjo and good humor than for any deep story.
The old recording was revived by Mighty Poplar, a string band drawing on early country and old-time material.
