Anna & Elizabeth, released on 17 March 2015 on Free Dirt Records (DIRT-CD-0072), is the second recording by Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle as a duo. It has sixteen songs, almost all of them very old. Roberts-Gevalt plays banjo, fiddle and guitar and LaPrelle plays clawhammer banjo, and several songs are sung without accompaniment. Joey Abarta plays uilleann pipes on the ballad “Orfeo,” and Alice Gerrard, one of the duo’s mentors, sings with them on several songs, including “Don’t Want to Die in the Storm” and “Voice from on High.” “Father Neptune” is attributed to Connie Converse.
Joe Dejarnette recorded, mixed and mastered the album and shares the producer credit with the duo. The booklet, titled Sixteen Stories, carries lyrics and photographs and a few notes on each song. Roberts-Gevalt and LaPrelle also perform with “crankies,” illuminated picture scrolls that show the stories of the songs they sing, made with paper cuts, prints and embroidered fabric.
