Beautiful Ashes (Mountain Home, MH 16442) is John Bowman’s 2015 solo album, recorded at The Track Shack in Glen Rock, Pennsylvania. Bowman and Troy Engle produced it, and Engle recorded it. The eleven tracks mix bluegrass, country and gospel songs, and Bluegrass Today’s review noted that drums appear on several of the bluegrass-style numbers.

Bowman sings lead and harmony and plays guitar, mandolin, banjo and bass. Ron Stewart plays fiddle, Rob Ickes plays resonator guitar and Weissenborn guitar, Tre’ Corley plays piano and Nathan Faucett plays drums, with Autumn Nelon singing harmony. The songs include Carter Stanley’s “Baby Girl,” “Cold Day in Hell” by Jeff Easter and Woody Wright, and “He’s Your Friend,” written by Engle. “They’re Holding Up the Ladder” is a bluegrass gospel number with Bowman on banjo and Stewart on fiddle.

Bowman began his career in 1991 as tenor singer and guitarist with Doyle Lawson, spent nearly two years in Quicksilver, then toured with Alison Krauss & Union Station until 1994. He then sang with the Isaacs for twelve years, toured with J.D. Crowe & the New South from 2007 to 2009, and was a founding member of The Boxcars in 2009 with Adam Steffey, Ron Stewart, Keith Garrett and Harold Nixon. He answered a call to preach in 1997 and left the Boxcars in 2014 to focus on a solo preaching and singing ministry, which Beautiful Ashes reflects.
