Blue Highway, the band's self-titled fourth album, was released on Ceili Records in 1999 — the bluegrass label that Ricky Skaggs had recently founded as Skaggs Family Records' bluegrass imprint. The album marked the band's move from Rebel (where their first three albums Wind to the West, It's a Long, Long Road, and Midnight Storm had appeared) to Skaggs's new venture. Jason Burleson was on hiatus from the group at the time, with Tom Adams handling the banjo chair from 1998 to 2000. The album sits at a transition point for one of the most consistent traditional-leaning bluegrass acts of its era — Tim Stafford and Wayne Taylor's lead vocals and the band's tight ensemble work intact through the label move.
