Contemporary Bluegrass

Blue Highway is one of the longest-running and most consistently decorated bluegrass supergroups of the modern era — a band built around three songwriter-vocalists (Tim Stafford, Wayne Taylor, Shawn Lane), alumni of Alison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs, together for over 30 years with only one lineup change at the dobro chair. Their 32 IBMA Awards, Grammy nominations, and Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame induction reflect both their musical influence and their dedication to all-original material.

  • Formed in 1994 when Tim Stafford (formerly of Alison Krauss & Union Station and the SPBGMA-winning band Dusty Miller) proposed a “weekend band” with Southwest Virginia coal truck driver and vocalist Wayne Taylor.
  • Founding lineup: Tim Stafford (guitar, vocals), Wayne Taylor (bass, lead vocals), Shawn Lane (mandolin, fiddle, tenor vocals — previously with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder), Rob Ickes (Dobro — previously with Lynn Morris), and Jason Burleson (banjo).
  • First show was December 31, 1994 at Kingsport, Tennessee's First Night Celebration.
  • Debut It's a Long, Long Road (Rebel, 1995) won IBMA Album of the Year 1996 and the band was named Emerging Artist of the Year.
  • Three Rebel albums (It's a Long, Long Road, Wind to the West, Midnight Storm) followed by a self-titled Ceili album (1999), then moved to Rounder in 2001.
  • Rounder catalog: Still Climbing Mountains (2001), Wondrous Love (2003), Marbletown (2005), Through the Window of a Train (2008 — title track won IBMA Song of the Year), Sounds of Home (2011), The Game (2014, #1 for 7 months on Bluegrass Unlimited Album Chart), Original Traditional (2016, Grammy-nominated), and Somewhere Far Away: Silver Anniversary (2019).
  • Dobro virtuoso Rob Ickes departed in November 2015 after 21 years; replaced by Gaven Largent (2015–18), Justin Moses (2018), and Gary Hultman (2019–present).
  • Burleson left briefly in 1999 but returned in 2001; the other three originals have never left.
  • IBMA Vocal Group of the Year 2012; Tim Stafford won IBMA Songwriter of the Year 2014, 2017, and 2023. Shawn Lane and Wayne Taylor are both accomplished songwriters whose material has been recorded by Ricky Skaggs, Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, and others.
  • Voted Favorite Bluegrass Artist of All Time by Bluegrass Today readers (April 2016).
  • Signed with the new Down the Road label (founded by Rounder founders Ken Irwin, Bill Nowlin, and Marian Leighton) in 2024, releasing Lonesome State of Mind. Live retrospective Live at ETSU! released April 2026.
  • Host the annual Blue Highway Fest in Big Stone Gap, Virginia — named IBMA Event of the Year.
