"Wind to the West," released in 1996 on Rebel Records (REB-CS-1731), is Blue Highway's second album, featuring Rob Ickes (dobro), Shawn Lane (mandolin, fiddle), Tim Stafford (guitar, vocals), and Wayne Taylor (bass, vocals). Arriving on the heels of the band's debut winning IBMA Album of the Year, the follow-up was itself nominated for the same honor and reached number one on the Bluegrass Now sales chart in January 1997. The gospel track "God Moves in a Windstorm" won IBMA Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year. Critics praised the record for foregrounding vocal blend over instrumental flash — a deliberate choice that established the band's signature sound in the mid-1990s traditional bluegrass revival.
