Midnight Storm was released by Rebel on January 27, 1998 (REB-CD 1746), the third album by Blue Highway after It’s a Long, Long Road (1995) and Wind to the West (1996). It was recorded at Le Garage in Nashville, with Brent Truitt as engineer, and the band produced it and mixed it with Truitt. Jon Weisberger wrote the liner notes.
The lineup is Tim Stafford on guitar, Shawn Lane on mandolin and fiddle, Jason Burleson on banjo, Rob Ickes on Dobro and Wayne Taylor on bass, and all five sing. Taylor takes lead on most of the songs, Lane leads “Pikeville Flood” and the Stanley Brothers’ “Midnight Storm,” and Stafford leads “I’d Rather Be a Lonesome Pine” and “Whither Thou Go.” On “He Walked All the Way Home” Burleson plays mandolin and Lane guitar, and “Cold Frosty Morn” is a banjo and fiddle duet for Burleson and Lane.
Band members wrote part of the program. Stafford is credited with “Find Me Out on a Mountain Top” and “Whither Thou Go” and shares the credit on “Some Day” with Olive Stockton; Taylor wrote “Keen Mountain Prison.” Jack Tottle contributed “I’d Rather Be a Lonesome Pine” and “May Your Life Be Sweet and Simple,” Jim Mills “Pikeville Flood,” Ellis Dykes “Getting Over You,” Mark Mathewson “Last Dollar Blues” and David Norris “He Walked All the Way Home.” The album is dedicated to Olive Stockton, “a remarkable woman who never knew the gift she gave us in ‘Some Day,’” and to Joe Burleson, whose banjo playing continues to inspire Jason.
