“Blue Ridge Mountain Girl” was written by the songwriting team of Wayland Holyfield and Richard Leigh. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded it in the 1980s, and Blue Highway brought it into bluegrass on their first album, released in 1995.
The song is a man’s regretful look back. He left his Virginia home to chase ambition and see the world, leaving behind a girl from the Blue Ridge Mountains; now, with wealth in hand and the girl long married to someone else, he finds that what he gained cannot replace what he lost.
“Blue Ridge Mountain Girl” helped launch Blue Highway, a band built on strong songs and tight harmony. The version heard here is by Blue Highway.
