Bluegrass ’98: 12 Great Instrumental Recordings (Pinecastle PRC 1079) was released on 16 September 1998. It is the fourth volume of an annual series of all-instrumental studio albums for Pinecastle Records that banjoist Scott Vestal produced, engineered and played on, beginning with Bluegrass ’95.

The twelve tracks were recorded in January 1998 at Acoustic Image Studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee, with the same six players on every one: Jeff Autry on guitar, Wayne Benson on mandolin, Scott Vestal on banjo, Aubrey Haynie on fiddle, Randy Kohrs on resonator guitar and Mark Schatz on bass. Vestal also mixed the album and wrote its liner notes, and Ben Surratt is credited as an engineer.

Traditional tunes make up part of the program (“Leather Britches,” “Last Night’s Fun,” “Maggie Blues” and “Home Sweet Home”). The rest are credited to named writers: “Hot Burrito Breakdown” to Byron Berline and Roger Bush, “Dear Old Dixie” to Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, “Saturday Night Ramble” to Joe Maphis, “Come Along Jody” to Tex Logan, “Red Tommy” to Wayne Benson, “Calgary” to Mark Schatz, “G Runs and Scruggs Licks” to Vestal, and “Coming Home” to W. J. Kirkpatrick.
