Bluegrass: An American Tradition (Pinecastle PRC 4010) is a studio album from Pinecastle Records presenting Eddie Adcock and Jim and Jesse McReynolds — three of bluegrass's most historically significant instrumentalists — in a format that draws from the traditional repertoire all three had spent their careers developing and performing. Eddie Adcock plays banjo and sings; Jesse McReynolds plays mandolin and sings; Jim McReynolds plays guitar and sings lead. The program assembles traditional bluegrass material in the direct ensemble format that Pinecastle Records used to document veteran performers working outside the Nashville mainstream, presenting the music free of production elaboration that had displaced it from commercial radio. Adcock's technically innovative banjo and the McReynolds brothers' sibling harmony give the recording an authority grounded in decades of shared ensemble experience across the tradition.
