Bluegrass: An American Tradition is a thirteen-track compilation on Pinecastle Records (PRC 4010), dated 2007 in the Bluegrass Discography. It gathers recordings by a range of bluegrass musicians rather than documenting a single group’s session: Bobby Osborne and Jesse McReynolds on “Bluegrass Express,” Bill Emerson with Tony Rice, Jimmy Martin and Red Allen on three tracks, John Hartford on “Over the Mountain,” the Osborne Brothers on “Ruby,” Chubby Wise on “Cotton Eyed Joe,” and Charlie Waller on “Dark as a Dungeon.”

Eddie Adcock is credited on four tracks: “San Antonio Rose,” “Crazy Blues” with Mac Wiseman, “Wayfaring Stranger,” and “Pallet on the Floor,” which is credited to Adcock with Jim and Jesse McReynolds. At least two of the tracks predate the release by many years. “Ruby” was recorded in 1998 at Hilltop Studios in Nashville, with Sonny Osborne on banjo, Bobby Osborne on mandolin, Terry Eldredge on guitar, David Crow and Glen Duncan on fiddles, Gene Wooten on dobro and Terry Smith on bass. “I Don’t Know Why,” by Bill Emerson with Red Allen, was recorded in 1991 at Webco Studio in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with Allen singing lead.
