The Charles River Valley Boys' Bluegrass and Old-Timey Music, released on the Cambridge-area Mount Auburn label (MTA-1) in 1962, is a founding document of the northern urban bluegrass revival. Bob Siggins plays banjo and sings; Ethan Signer, guitar, mandolin, and autoharp; John Cooke, guitar; and Fritz Richmond, washtub bass—the 1963 configuration of the band that formed around the MIT and Harvard community and the Cambridge folk scene centered on Club 47. Producer Paul Rothchild recorded the group presenting traditional Appalachian material with scholarly rigor and youthful energy. John Cooke later managed Janis Joplin's Full Tilt Boogie Band; Fritz Richmond's washtub bass became something of a trademark of the Cambridge folk sound of the period.
