Bluegrass in the American Tradition

Bill Clifton

Album · 1965 · Nashville NLP 2018

Bluegrass in the American Tradition, released by Nashville Records in 1965, gathers Bill Clifton and his Dixie Mountain Boys at one of the most active stretches of Clifton's career — the period when he was bridging the older Appalachian song repertoire and the folk-revival audience that had begun to take notice of bluegrass. The album included his original Bluegrass Ramble alongside traditional and gospel material in the unhurried style Clifton had built since the 1950s. Clifton was unusual among first-generation bluegrass figures for his scholarly interest in the tradition, his early embrace of folk-revival circles, and his later move to England as a bluegrass ambassador overseas.
