Bluegrass Memories was originally released in 1984 on Rebel (REB 1630) by Dave Evans and River Bend; the catalog date of 2011 reflects a later digital reissue rather than the original LP. Evans (banjo/lead vocals) leads his River Bend band through traditional Stanley-school bluegrass, his hard-edged high-lonesome singing and banjo carrying the program. Evans had spent the late 1970s as a vocal partner with Larry Sparks in the Lonesome Ramblers, and Bluegrass Memories is one of a string of Rebel LPs he cut through the early- and mid-1980s in his own band — a body of work that defined his post-Sparks identity as one of the most uncompromising hard-traditional voices on the label, alongside Ralph Stanley and Charlie Sizemore.
