Bluegrass Rules, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder's 1997 Skaggs Family Records debut, was a declaration of purpose as much as an album title. After years as a mainstream country star signed to major labels, Skaggs made an explicit and public return to the bluegrass tradition that had formed him. Kentucky Thunder was assembled with exacting standards: Barry Bales on bass, Bryan Sutton on guitar, and Glen Duncan on fiddle formed one of the most accomplished bluegrass bands of the era. The album reinvigorated Skaggs's artistic reputation among hard-core bluegrass listeners and launched a sustained second chapter in his career that produced multiple IBMA awards.
