Brittany Haas (Ook Records, 2004) is the self-titled debut album from the California-born fiddler, released when she was a teenager and already reflecting a musical curiosity that ranged well beyond her Appalachian and old-time roots. Haas plays fiddle throughout; Darol Anger contributes mandolin, mandola, and extended string instruments; Bruce Molsky plays fiddle, banjo, and octave fiddle; Scott Nygaard plays guitar; Todd Sickafoose provides bass; and Natalie Haas plays cello. The ensemble reflects a circle of Bay Area and Northeast acoustic musicians who had each pushed string music beyond genre convention, and their collective presence gave the debut a searching, stylistically open character. Haas's tone — already full and secure — and her rhythmic ease set the record apart from the more cautious debut offerings that the fiddle world typically expected from young players.
