Brothers From Different Mothers was released on 31 March 2009 on Rounder (11661-0617-2). It is the second album by Dailey & Vincent, after their self-titled debut of January 2008, and Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent produced it themselves. Dailey had been lead singer and guitarist with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and Vincent a member of Ricky Skaggs’s Kentucky Thunder, before the two signed with Rounder as a duo in October 2007.
The band on the record is Dailey on guitar and lead vocals, Vincent on bass, archtop guitar and mandolin, Jeff Parker on mandolin and vocals, Joe Dean on banjo and bass vocals and Adam Haynes on fiddle. Bryan Sutton, Andy Leftwich, Ron Block, Stuart Duncan and Tim Crouch also play, and David Angell and David Davidson (violins), Kris Wilkinson (viola) and John Catchings (cello) add strings. It was recorded in Nashville. Two songs were written by Donald Reid and Harold Reid, “Years Ago” and “There Is You,” and Harold Reid is credited on the album with a spoken part as “Roadhog.” The closing song, “On the Other Side,” written by Jimmy Fortune, Kevin Denney and Tom Bodkin, won the IBMA award for Recorded Gospel Performance in 2009, the year Dailey & Vincent were also named Entertainer of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year. Other songs include Gillian Welch and David Rawlings’s “Winter’s Come and Gone,” Roger Miller’s “You Oughta Be Here With Me” and two by Dailey, “Girl in the Valley” and “When I Reach That Home Up There.”
