Call Me Long Gone cover

Call Me Long Gone (Vetco LP 3036) was released in 1980 and recorded at Vetco Recording Studio in Cincinnati, Ohio, with Lou Ukelson credited as producer and engineer. It is the second of two Vetco LPs by Dave Evans & River Bend; the first, Highway Fifty Two, came out in 1979.

Evans, a banjo player and tenor singer, formed River Bend in 1978; he was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, in 1950 and had played professionally with Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys and with Larry Sparks. On this record he is credited on banjo and guitar. Buddy Griffin plays banjo, guitar, fiddle and bass, and Josh Graves, the Flatt and Scruggs dobro player who is credited with bringing the resonator guitar into bluegrass, plays dobro. Jim Rigsby sings with Evans and Griffin on most tracks. “Whiskey” adds Art Wydner on bass and Tommy Cordell.

The songs include Evans’s own “You Call Me Long Gone,” the Flatt and Scruggs number “Is It Too Late Now,” Ralph Stanley’s “Whiskey” and the traditional “Poor Rebel Soldier,” “Soldier’s Return” and “Legend of the Johnson Boys.”
