Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys

Album · 2009 · Rounder 11661-0614-2

Can’t You Hear the Mountains Calling was released by Rounder Records (11661-0614-2) on 22 September 2009. It is a remixed and remastered version, made from the original source tapes, of an album first issued on cassette in March 1986 on Ralph Stanley’s River Tracks label (RTS-1097) as 16 Years; Copper Creek put it on CD in 1996. The recording dates from around 1981. Stanley and Otis Lynn Dillon produced it, and Paul Q. Kolderie and Adam Taylor mixed the Rounder version.

The Clinch Mountain Boys on the album are Charlie Sizemore on guitar and lead vocals, Junior Blankenship on lead guitar, Curly Ray Cline on fiddle and Jack Cooke on bass and baritone and tenor vocals, with Ralph Stanley on banjo and lead and tenor vocals. Sizemore wrote liner notes for the reissue, recalling a session recorded live in one day with the mixing finished the next. The twelve songs include Carter Stanley’s “Won’t You Be Mine” and “This Weary Heart You Stole Away,” the Bill Monroe, Joe Ahr and Juanita Pennington song “In Despair,” the traditional “Cotton-Eyed Joe” and “Little Willie,” and Stanley’s banjo instrumental “Dickenson County Breakdown.”
