Carolina Blue, released in 1993 on Rebel Records, brings together Lou Reid, Terry Baucom, and a cast of seasoned Carolina-region players in a set that exemplifies the IBMA-era mainstream at its most polished. Baucom, one of the most admired banjo players of his generation, had previously worked with J.D. Crowe and Doyle Lawson before co-founding this project. Reid's lead vocals are smooth and assured, and the album's track selection — including versions of "Roving Gambler" and "Don't Pass Me By" — balances tradition-leaning originals with well-chosen covers.
