Changes (Rounder Records, 2019) is a Seldom Scene album and the first the band recorded without a founding member — banjoist Ben Eldridge, present since the band's 1971 formation, had retired in 2016. The lineup of Lou Reid on mandolin, Dudley Connell on guitar and lead vocals, Ron Stewart on banjo, Fred Travers on dobro, and Ronnie Simpkins on bass navigates that transition while sustaining the band's musical identity. Produced with Rounder co-founder Ken Irwin, the album's program includes a Phil Ochs cover alongside songs by Gordon Lightfoot, John Prine, and James Taylor — a characteristically eclectic selection reflecting the Seldom Scene's long history of reaching well outside the bluegrass canon for meaningful songs. The record affirms the continuity of a band that has reinvented itself across more than five decades of active performing.
