Changes cover

Changes (Rounder, released 7 June 2019) is a Seldom Scene album of songs by writers of the 1960s and early 1970s. It followed the January 2016 retirement of banjoist Ben Eldridge, the last founding member, after 44 years with the band. The lineup on the record is Lou Reid on mandolin and guitar, Dudley Connell on guitar, Ron Stewart on banjo and fiddle, Fred Travers on Dobro and Ronnie Simpkins on bass. Reid, Connell and Travers each sing lead: Reid on five songs, Connell on five and Travers on two.

The Seldom Scene produced the album with Ken Irwin, one of the founders of Rounder Records. Nearly all of it was recorded and mixed at The Bar in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with Jim Robeson engineering; “I’ll Be Here in the Morning” was also recorded at Eastwood Studios in Cana, Virginia, and the banjo overdubs were made at the Sleepy Valley Barn.

The twelve songs are Fred Neil’s “Everybody’s Talkin’,” Gordon Lightfoot’s “Steel Rail Blues,” “Darcy Farrow” by Steve Gillette and Tom Campbell, Paul Siebel’s “Louise,” John Prine’s “A Good Time,” Steve Young’s “Seven Bridges Road,” Bob Dylan’s “Bob Dylan’s Dream,” “Pack Up Your Sorrows” by Richard Farina and Pauline Marden, Phil Ochs’s “Changes,” Townes Van Zandt’s “I’ll Be Here in the Morning,” Dan Fogelberg’s “Morning Sky” and James Taylor’s “Sweet Baby James.”
