Sam Bush

Album · 2009 · Sugar Hill SUG-CD 4055

Circles Around Me (Sugar Hill SUG-CD 4055) was released on 20 October 2009. Sam Bush plays mandolin and fiddle and sings lead; he founded New Grass Revival in 1971 and led it until 1989. His band on the record is Scott Vestal on banjo, Stephen Mougin on guitar, Byron House on bass and Chris Brown on drums, with Mougin and House singing harmony.

Del McCoury plays guitar and sings on two songs associated with Bill Monroe, “Roll On Buddy, Roll On” and “Midnight on the Stormy Deep.” Jerry Douglas plays dobro on “Gold Heart Locket” and “Junior Heywood,” and Edgar Meyer is on “The Old North Woods” and “Junior Heywood.” Jeff Black wrote “Gold Heart Locket” and co-wrote the title song with Bush. Bush wrote “The Ballad of Stringbean and Estelle” with Guy Clark and Verlon Thompson, about the 1973 murders of the Grand Ole Opry performer David “Stringbean” Akeman and his wife. Two songs return to the New Grass Revival catalog, “Souvenir Bottles” and “Whisper My Name,” and the fiddle-and-banjo piece “Apple Blossom” features the late Courtney Johnson, New Grass Revival’s original banjo player. A hidden track, Robert Johnson’s “Hot Tamales,” follows “Whisper My Name.”
