Classic Bluegrass (Rebel CD 1119, 1993) is a seventeen-track compilation of Dave Evans’s early Rebel recordings. Every track comes from one of four LPs Evans made for the label between 1981 and 1985: eight from Goin’ Round This World (1981, his first for Rebel), three from Poor Rambler (1983), four from Bluegrass Memories (1984) and two from Close to Home (1985).
The Bluegrass Memories sessions took place in November 1983 at Riverside Sound Studios in Ashland, Kentucky, with Evans on banjo, Derek Sparkman on guitar, Lester Williams on mandolin, Jon Glik on fiddle and Mike Gerry on bass. The 1981 LP credits Clancy Fields and Landon Messer on guitar and Tommy Cordell on fiddle, and Close to Home credits Johnny Brown on guitar and Wendy Miller on mandolin. The one instrumental on the compilation is “Shenandoah Waltz.”
Evans, who grew up along the Ohio River, was a tenor singer with Larry Sparks’s Lonesome Ramblers in 1972 and 1973 and formed Dave Evans and River Bend in the late 1970s.
