"Common Ground," released in 1999 on Sugar Hill Records (SHCD-3895), is the debut album by BlueRidge, a quartet formed around banjo veteran Terry Baucom and mandolinist Alan Bibey. Baucom had built his reputation as a member of J.D. Crowe & the New South; Bibey came out of IIIrd Tyme Out. The two are joined by guitarist Randy Graham and bassist Wayne Winkle for a straight-ahead traditional set built on tight four-part harmonies and clean ensemble picking — the kind of record that reinforced Sugar Hill's position as the premier home for that style at the close of the 1990s. Session fiddle support from Ronnie Stewart and Tim Smith adds texture throughout.
