The Complete Studio Rarities Collection is a digital-only Grateful Dead compilation issued in 2013 by Grateful Dead Records and Rhino. It brings together, in one set, the studio bonus tracks first added to the expanded CD editions of the band’s albums in two box sets, The Golden Road (1965–1973) in 2001 and Beyond Description (1973–1989) in 2004. The material runs from the band’s first studio sessions in the mid-1960s to a 1986 rehearsal of “Black Muddy River” and the 1987 B-side “My Brother Esau,” and takes in outtakes, acoustic demos, single edits, instrumental jams and radio spots.

A handful of tracks come from traditional and country sources. Two were first issued as bonus tracks on the expanded Terrapin Station: an instrumental take of the traditional “Peggy-O” recorded on 2 November 1976 and “Catfish John,” a Bob McDill and Allen Reynolds song, recorded in the fall of that year. A sung “Peggy-O” from 16 July 1979 and the traditional “Jack-A-Roe” from two days earlier were bonus tracks on the expanded Go to Heaven. “Catfish John” had a life outside the band as well: Old & In the Way’s archive CD Breakdown ends with it as a hidden track, taken from the group’s October 1973 shows in San Francisco with Jerry Garcia on banjo.
