Country Music Time (Decca DL 4285 in mono, DL 74285 in stereo) came out in 1962 and collects twelve Jimmy Martin recordings made for Decca in Nashville between 1956 and 1961. Two tracks, “Skip, Hop and Wobble” and “Hit Parade of Love,” date from a session on 9 May 1956, and “The Joke’s on You” from 13 January 1960. The other nine come from two sessions produced by Owen Bradley at the Bradley Film and Recording Studio on 11 July and 30 October 1961.
On the 1961 sessions Martin sang lead and played guitar, with Paul Craft on banjo, Paul Williams, Junior Huskey on bass and a drummer (Buddy Harman in July, Willie Ackerman in October). Lois Johnson sang high baritone and Kirk Hansard bass vocal on the July session, which produced “I Can, I Will, I Do Believe,” “There Was a Love” and “Steppin’ Stones.” “Drink Up and Go Home,” cut in October, has Williams on tenor and Craft on baritone behind Martin’s lead. Several of the tracks had already been issued as Decca singles: “Hit Parade of Love” in November 1956, “Skip, Hop and Wobble” in November 1957, “The Joke’s on You” in March 1960, and “I Can, I Will, I Do Believe” backed with “There Was a Love” in October 1961.
