Cryin’ Holy Unto the Lord cover

Cryin’ Holy Unto the Lord is an all-gospel album that Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys recorded in Nashville between May and July 1990 and MCA released on CD in 1991 (MCAD-10017). It is listed as the last studio album Monroe made with the band. Steve Buchanan produced it, and the sessions were held at Reflections Studio, Sound Emporium and Digital Recorders.

The band on most tracks is Monroe on mandolin, Tom Ewing on guitar, Blake Williams on banjo, Clarence “Tater” Tate on fiddle and Billy Rose on bass. Ewing sings lead on the title song, “Shine Hallelujah Shine,” “Just a Little Talk With Jesus” and “He’ll Take You In,” with Monroe singing the tenor part, and Monroe himself takes the lead on “Baptize Me in the Cumberland River.” Monroe is credited as composer of that song, of “Shine Hallelujah Shine” and of “You’re Drifting Away,” which Ricky Skaggs sings.

The album also brought in guests from other bands: Ralph Stanley sings lead on Carter Stanley’s “Harbor of Love,” Bobby Osborne leads “Just Over in the Glory Land” with Sonny Osborne on banjo, Mac Wiseman sings “This World Is Not My Home,” and Jim and Jesse McReynolds appear on “Are You Lost in Sin,” a song they wrote. Wiseman also plays guitar on “Just a Little Talk With Jesus.”
