Cryin' Holy Unto the Lord, released in 1991 on MCA Records, gathers Bill Monroe's sacred recordings into a late-career gospel collection that documents the dimension of his work that existed alongside the secular music but drew on an entirely different emotional register. Monroe, raised in a Methodist household in Rosine, Kentucky, carried the shaped-note singing tradition and the camp-meeting fervor of rural Southern Protestantism into bluegrass from the beginning; the gospel quartet had been a standard feature of his Opry performances for decades. 'Just a Little Talk With Jesus' demonstrates how comfortably Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys worked in this idiom.
