Dead Grass (Cedar Glen Music Group, CGM 1018-2) was released in May 2000 as a record of Grateful Dead songs played as country and bluegrass, with Vassar Clements on fiddle and credited on the Discogs listing as Dead Grass Featuring Vassar Clements. Clements and Steve Roberts produced it, and George Clinton engineered.
Butch Baldassari plays mandolin, Doug Jernigan pedal steel, Reggie Harris guitar and banjo, and Ryan Harris bass. Gwen Vaughn and Ryan Harris are the credited vocalists, with Jeff White singing background vocals. Eleven songs make up the program, most of them by Garcia and Hunter: “Brown-Eyed Women,” “Casey Jones,” “Attics of My Life,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Alabama Getaway,” “Ripple,” “U.S. Blues,” “Dire Wolf,” “Friend of the Devil,” “It Must Have Been the Roses” and “Mexicali Blues.”
Clements had played with Garcia before: in 1973 he was a member of Old & In the Way, the bluegrass group that included Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Peter Rowan and John Kahn.
