Del and the Boys (Ceili Music CEIL 2006) is a 2001 album by the Del McCoury Band. The lineup was Del McCoury on guitar and lead vocals, his sons Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Rob McCoury on banjo, Jason Carter on fiddle and Mike Bub on bass; Carter and Bub had joined in 1992. Del and Ronnie McCoury produced it, and it was recorded and mixed at Skaggs Place Studios with Brent King engineering.
The twelve songs open with Richard Thompson’s “1952 Vincent Black Lightning,” which Thompson first recorded on his album Rumor and Sigh. The others include “Learnin’ the Blues,” “Count Me Out,” “All Aboard,” “Recovering Pharisee,” “The King’s Shilling” and “Travelin’ Teardrop Blues.” Stuart Duncan adds fiddle to “The Bluegrass Country” and “Unequal Love,” and Ricky Skaggs sings on “The Bluegrass Country.” Rob McCoury switches to guitar on “Recovering Pharisee.” The album was reissued on the band’s McCoury Music label in 2007.
Del McCoury was born in Bakersville, North Carolina, in 1939 and grew up in York County, Pennsylvania. He joined Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in February 1963. The band already had a banjo player, so McCoury played guitar and sang, and he stayed until February 1964. He became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 2003 and was elected to the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2011.
