Del and the Boys (Ceili Music CEIL 2006) is a recording by the Del McCoury Band — Del McCoury on guitar and tenor vocals, his sons Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Rob McCoury on banjo, Jason Carter on fiddle, and Mike Bub on bass — the definitive working lineup of a band widely recognized as one of the preeminent traditional bluegrass acts of the post-1990 era. The Ceili Music imprint, which Del McCoury controlled, provided the band a degree of artistic independence while maintaining established distribution channels. Del's high, keening tenor — shaped by his formative years singing lead for Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys — and the younger McCourys' exceptional instrumental command define the band's sound: a contemporary realization of the high lonesome tradition rather than a nostalgic recreation of it.
